Tower “del Popolo”

Latitudine: 45.597417

Longitudine: 9.884792

Between 1813 and 1838 Torre del Popolo, also known as San Fedele was built on Torre Mirabella, so that it could serve as the town’s bell tower. It is 85 metres high, excluding the sculpture of San Fedele, which is 6.8 metres. It is the tallest tower with a circular section in Italy. Inside there is an imposing spiral staircase leading to the bell-chamber and beyond, right to the top, where a circular parapet offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. After the Second World War, which led to the loss of almost all the bells, the tower now houses a majestic concert of 12 bells. On top of the tower stands the statue of San Fedele of Como, made of separate plaster parts covered with copper. Tradition has it that the statue looks towards the river to underline its importance for the local area.
