The town of Capriolo lies within the territory of the Parco Oglio Nord and so is also part of Franciacorta. It borders Castelli Calepio, which lies just across the river, but is already within the province of Bergamo. The town lies at the foot of Monte Alto, just like the nearby towns of Corte Franca and Adro which are also part of Franciacorta. While the hill overlooking the town belongs exclusively to Capriolo and is dedicated to the hermit Onofrio. In actual fact, there is a sanctuary here that bears his name and the road leading up to it is marked with the Stations of the Cross, or Via Crucis. The walk up to the top is very pleasant and quite. The area of the town close to the Oglio River has a system of mediaeval canals called Roggia Fusia, also extending to the nearby towns of Paratico, Palazzolo and Rovato. The name of the town probably comes from the Italian name for the roe deer, capriolo, which at one time was perhaps common in the woodland areas here. However, some say that there may have been a link with a noble family of the same name. The Palazzolo-Paratico railway line runs through the town’s territory and although closed to normal traffic it is, however, used occasionally by the “Treno Blu” tourist line.
