The village of Calepio is worth a mention thanks to the mediaeval structure of the village and the castle, situated in a panoramic position. The castle was probably founded for the first time around 1000 and then rebuilt by Trussardo from 1430. It is likely that the structure was conceived for defensive purposes but over time underwent numerous changes to become a noble residence; for example, one of the towers became a chapel, devoted to San Maurizio. The Calepio family, which Trussardo was a member of, originated from a branch of the Martinengo family, the “Calepio Counts”, as the family called themselves, with the approval and support of the Republic of Venice. The branch died out in the early nineteenth century and in 1849 the castle and lands were sold. The castle is open to visitors.
